Amazon Mechanical Turk Review: What is It?
So, what is Amazon Mechanical Turk? To put it in Amazon’s own words:
“ MTurk is an online crowdsourcing marketplace that makes it easier for business owners to outsource their processes to an online workforce that can perform these processes virtually.”

Pretty much it is an online platform that allows people who want to work from home to complete simple tasks in exchange for payment. The tasks you can complete can comprise of simple data validation, online research, content moderation, survey completion and much more. Amazon Mechanical Turk was created to help business owners complete the tasks that only another human can complete by breaking down complex tasks into simple individual ones that many people can complete.
How Does it Work?
Amazon Mechanical Turk works as the middle man, bringing business owners and workers together in a safe and easy to use interface. Business owners just log into the platform, list the tasks they need completed and pay the fee required by Amazon. Then workers who are signed up on Amazon Mechanical Turk can go ahead and complete any jobs that are currently available to them.
There are a variety of jobs, also known as HITs, that are available to workers, but they may have to qualify for some of them based on the complexity of the job itself.
Pros. vs. Cons.
Pros:
- Free to sign up
- Lots of jobs available
- Solid payment history
- Easy transfer to bank account or Amazon gift card
Cons:
- Most of the HIT’s available are extremely low paying
- It can be difficult to qualify for many of the jobs
- Boring and repetitive work
Amazon Mechanical Stuff: The Bad Stuff You Should Know About
Low Paying HITs
Unfortunately, if you are looking to make a full-time living on Amazon Mechanical Turk, I highly recommend you look elsewhere. Many of the HITs available only pay a couple of cents for the completed task. Of course, there are a few higher paying ones that you will come across, but a majority of the ones you will see barely pay anything.
Most of the time workers report earning anywhere between $8.50 to $15.00 an hour for certain tasks. While this can be great for some part-time cash, it isn’t going to be sustainable full-time.
Qualification Process for some HITs Can Be Difficult
The HITs that are available to workers tend to be available to a majority of workers. However, there are many HIT’s that you must qualify for before you can even begin working. To qualify for some of these HITs will vary based on the task that needs to be completed. For some HITs, all you need to do is to increase your approval rating. Others, you may need to take a test. A few will require you to request qualification specifically.

The most effective way to increase the amount of HITs you qualify for is to explore the forum and see which daily HITs mention qualification and how to qualify.
Boring and Repetitive Work
If you are not used to working from home, then this may not be the best option for you. Most of the work you are asked to do is repetitive. This can become very boring very fast, making it harder to complete your tasks as time goes on. Never go into this thinking you are going to be excited with every little task. You will only be disappointed.

No, this isn’t a scam. As a platform owned and hosted by Amazon itself, a company with a well known history mind you, this is one program you can have peace of mind working with.

My Final Opinion
Amazon Mechanical Turk is a great work from home option for those looking into working for themselves for the first time or those looking to supplement their monthly income. While it may be a legitimate program, with its low paying jobs and difficult qualification process, this isn’t a program I would recommend to everyone.
With that said, do your research before trying Amazon Mechanical Turk. Make sure it is something you want to spend the time on even with its low payout. Make sure you have the time to dedicate to it. Above all, make sure you understand this is not a program that will make you a millionaire overnight.
Final Verdict:
Legit, but not Recommended
