Today I don’t want to talk about another way you can make money online.
Instead, I want to give you a look into my own life and see how I am able to make a living online and have been for the past 6 years.
Why?
Well, for starters, I want to show you that not every Internet marketer out there is trying to sell to you. I sincerely want to teach you how to make a living online because if there is one thing I have learned so far is that it is incredibly easy to do. The problem lies in people not being given the facts straight up on how to do it. And two, I want to show you some of the work that is involved in the process so you can get a better understanding of what you may have to do to achieve the same results in the future.
Where Did I Start?
If you take a look at the About Me page on this site, you will see I started in pretty much the same way as everybody else who started making a living online, except I was worse off. I started off getting dragged through the various scams there are online in hopes of making quick money that I desperately needed.
Even at that time I quickly learned the way I was going about things was wrong and that it wasn’t going to make me a dime.
Even then I knew I needed a way to make money in order to get myself back on my feet while also a way to build a sustainable income in the background slowly so that I would never find myself in that position ever again.
What I needed most of all, was a place or person to teach me how to do EXACTLY that!
I found that place in Wealthy Affiliate. It was there that I learned about freelancing (from other users). It was there that I learned how to take the time and build an online business in the background that would work FOR me while I focused on getting the cash I needed.
My Process Step-by-Step
Let’s get right into what I learned at Wealthy Affiliate and what it is I do on a daily basis.
Step One: Freelancing
Now, I am and have been a professional freelance writer ever since I started years ago. It is the one source of income I use to this day to cover my most important bills while saving the money I earn monthly from my online business.
Freelancing, which I talk about more in this post, is the method of completing a job or a task for a client or customer in exchange for compensation. There are hundreds of different types of freelance work out there that can range from writing to website development. What I did was take my natural knack for writing and turned it into a service in which I write content for clients and businesses. This content can range from blog posts, press releases to even product reviews. It all depends on what the client needs.
To start freelancing, you should visit a freelancing website just as I did when I first started. Starting with a freelancing website is a great way to get your feet wet in the freelancing industry. It is also a great way to begin building a professional portfolio, which can then be used later on to get higher paying clients.
The best places to begin freelancing include:
- Upwork-this is the place I first started using back when it was originally called oDesk.com and before it merged with another freelancing site known as Elance.com
- Freelancer.com-this is where most new freelancers begin their freelance journey, and it is still a site I use today. However, I advise using caution when using this site. This site is rampant with people on their running scams.
- Guru.com-this is where I found most of my high paying clients. I advise using this site once you think you have earned enough freelancing jobs on the other sites.
- Craigslist-this is a great place to use especially when you want to build long-term working relationships with clients. Look for freelancing jobs in the gigs or jobs section and search for the term “freelance” or “remote.”
Step Two: Wealthy Affiliate Training and Building a Website in the Background
Freelancing in itself is enough to keep me busy on most days, but I still make sure I make time to check in with Wealthy Affiliate and update my sites regularly to ensure I still make money from them with barely any work.
If you don’t know what Wealthy Affiliate is, it is an online community dedicated to teaching its members about Internet marketing. It does this through various training classrooms, live chat and access to a WordPress website builder. It teaches you every aspect of Internet marketing such as:
- Keyword research
- Website design
- Email marketing
- Pay-per-click campaign set up
- Landing page creation and set up
- Product creation and promotion
- Search engine optimization
- And much more
While Wealthy Affiliate is a great place to learn how to build your own sustainable online business, one added benefit to learning about Internet marketing from this site (and one that I found out to my utter astonishment) is that you can take what you learn here and apply it to real-life jobs in the field of marketing. You would be surprised by how many companies value these skills and are willing to offer you a good-paying job if you have them!
Now, as it applies to me, I used the teachings of Wealthy Affiliate to build sustainable websites that make money in the background so I can take the time to focus more on my freelancing business. I built websites such as this one, PetFoodio.com (my pet food review website) and TheCBDFanatic.com (a company blog site for my primary job as a digital marketing manager for a local startup). Two of these sites use affiliate marketing as the main business model while the second site is specifically designed to drive traffic to the products the company I work for produces. It is also used to gain an audience for that company.
Every day, every single day, I spend between 2 to 4 hours a day updating these three sites with content that targets specific keywords targeted to the niche. Each piece of content I create either directs to the main affiliate product I am promoting, directs to my email list (which can be used to promote various products) or is used to educate my audience on a topic related to the niche. My content ranges from blog posts, product reviews, guests post or training videos.
That is about 6 pieces of content a day or up to 42 pieces of content a week.
In the short term, I usually don’t see much profit from these sites. However, in the long-term (30 days), each of these sites make me thousands per month. I tend not to look at my profits daily. I focus primarily on providing insightful and helpful content to my audience. My profits are usually the last on my mind.
My Process: The Bottomline
Let’s just say that at the end of the day, I am a busy bee. However, my process isn’t EXACTLY unique. My process can literally be replicated by anyone. Hell, some of you may even be able to do it better than I can! However, what I want to get through to you is that my process took time. The freelancing part was the easy part. I was able to make money using that method within the first week. The second part of my process took even longer, between 2 to 3 months before I started seeing money coming in.
Of course, this doesn’t mean it will take that long for you. It all depends on the niche, how much time is dedicated to each site and of course, how you monetize the site. I have seen people within Wealthy Affiliate make money within their first month, but I have also seen people make money after their first year.
Every person is different, but every person does share one thing in common: They too can easily make money working from home.
